Post-Operative Instructions After Dental Numbing (Local Anesthesia)
Monitor Your Child Closely
- The numbness typically lasts 2 to 4 hours, depending on the type of anesthetic used.
- Young children may not understand the sensation and may chew, suck, or bite their lips, cheeks, or tongue out of curiosity or discomfort.
Prevent Injury to Mouth Tissues
- DO NOT allow your child to eat or chew until the numbness has completely worn off.
- Offer soft, non-chewable foods like applesauce, yogurt, or smoothies if they are hungry (only if you’re confident they won’t chew).
- Discourage talking or playing with their mouth while numb.
- Watch for signs of biting, redness, swelling, or complaints about a sore lip or cheek.
Reassure Your Child
- Explain that the numbness is temporary and will go away soon.
- Let them know it may feel “funny” or “tingly,” but it’s normal and not something to worry about.
What to Do if Biting or Injury Occurs
- If your child bites their lip, cheek, or tongue, it may swell or appear white or red.
- Keep the area clean. Rinse gently with warm salt water (if old enough).
- Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
- Avoid spicy, salty, or acidic foods that may irritate the injury.
- If swelling worsens, there’s bleeding that won’t stop, or signs of infection (fever, pus), contact our office.
Pain Management (if needed)
- If your child experiences discomfort once the numbness wears off, you may give age-appropriate pain relief, like children’s acetaminophen or ibuprofen, as directed.
Post-Operative Instructions After Dental Extraction (For Children)
What to Expect
- Some bleeding or oozing is normal for a few hours.
- Mild swelling and soreness can also occur.
- A blood clot will form in the socket—this is necessary for healing. It must not be disturbed.
Things to Avoid (to protect the healing site)
- NO Straws for 3 Days
- Sucking through a straw can dislodge the blood clot and cause dry socket, a painful condition.
- NO Spitting or Rinsing Vigorously for 24 Hours
- Rinsing too soon or too hard can also dislodge the clot.
- NO Hard, Crunchy, or Chewy Foods
- Stick to soft foods like applesauce, mashed potatoes, yogurt, or soup (not hot).
- NO Hot Foods or Drinks for the First 24 Hours
- Heat can dissolve the clot and delay healing.
- NO Physical Activity or Rough Play
- Keep your child calm for the rest of the day to minimize bleeding and swelling.
Bleeding Control
- Your child will go home with gauze on the extraction site.
- Keep the gauze in place with gentle pressure for 30–40 minutes.
- Replace with fresh gauze if needed. If bleeding continues past a few hours, contact us.
Managing Swelling and Discomfort
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of the cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off during the first few hours to reduce post extraction swelling, which is normal and to be expected.
- Use children’s acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed for pain.
After 24 Hours
- You may rinse your child’s mouth gently with warm salt water (½ tsp salt in 1 cup water) 2–3 times a day to keep the area clean.
- Continue soft foods and avoid straws for 3 days.
Call the Our Office If
- Bleeding doesn’t stop after 4 hours
- Severe pain or swelling develops
- Fever or signs of infection appear
- Your child complains of a bad taste or pain a few days later (possible dry socket)
